This unique one-day course is an intensive introduction to the management of land contamination in the UK, including the key legislation and guidance. It is designed to promote the cost-effective identification, characterisation, risk assessment and, if necessary, remediation of land affected by contamination. This course will outlines the framework for the management of land contamination contained within CLR11. Specifically, it will: • Introduce you to the latest UK legislation and guidance underpinning the UK approach to land contamination, including the legal definition of “contaminated land”. • Explain the risk assessment process promoted in UK guidance including: o the importance of the site conceptual model; o the fundamental nature of a desktop survey and site walkover report (Phase 1); o general principles of effective site characterisation (i.e. ground investigation) and how potential risks human health and other receptors can be assessed using the data obtained (Phase 2);  including a discussion of currently-available Generic Assessment Criteria (GACs) in the UK; and • Outline the range of remediation techniques and technologies commonly applied to manage unacceptable land contamination risks in the UK (Phase 3).
