The seminar will examine the requirements for control of solvent activities in Chapter 2 and Chapter 5 of the EU Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) and the UK implementing regulations. We will define what volatile organic compounds (VOC) are according to EU and UK legislation, why they are regulated and look at compliance options. In particular we will look at what is emitted and how these emissions are controlled using contained and fugitive emission limits. The seminar will also examine the derivation of VOC target emissions (for use with solvent reduction schemes) and how compliance can be demonstrated. It will also examine the structure of solvent management plans and possible solvent emission control strategies - including both solvent reduction schemes and end of pipe solutions. The seminar will examine how to understand and review solvent management plans. Through use of example exercises and break-out working, delegates will gain useful experience and knowledge of the practical and administrative aspects of regulating VOC emissions from solvent using processes. We will also look at the concept of derogation.
