The investigation of potentially contaminated land commences with a review of documentary evidence, a site walkover survey and interviews with key personalities from a site’s past. Resolving significant uncertainties in the resulting conceptual model forms the objectives of the intrusive investigation whose findings will inform a quantitative risk assessment. A good understanding of the conceptual model and site characterisation data is necessary to make informed decisions when reviewing third party reports under the planning regime or in the context of Part 2A of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. This course will • Briefly review conceptual site models • Show how the site investigation objectives and site investigation design should be anchored it the conceptual site model • Introduce the common methods of intrusive investigation and highlight some of the more innovative techniques • Explain how to create sampling strategies • Introduce field and laboratory analysis of common contaminants and associated parameters; • Describe ways of presenting the data • Provide delegates with the opportunity to put the knowledge into practice with a series of practical exercises. The seminar stands alone but can be also undertaken as the second module of the EMAQ ‘Essentials of CLM’ course. The ‘Essentials of CLM’ training package, which is endorsed by the CIEH, is designed around the framework DEFRA proposed as part of the outcome of their research project on skills in contaminated land management (SP 1003).
